WASHINGTON, DC; April 15, 2008 — Congressional leaders and the White House have agreed on an economic stimulus package that will soon give most Americans a federal tax rebate between $600 and $1,200. The Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington encourages metropolitan D.C. residents to give a portion of their tax rebates to small local charities that provide critical services to those in need but don’t have large fundraising staffs.
Giving to such charities aligns with the purpose of the economic stimulus package, which is to boost the economy while helping our most impoverished communities gain access to basic services.
An April 2008 survey of Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington charities found that three-fifths expected the downturn in the economy to have a negative affect on their fundraising in 2008.
“Small charities are well-positioned to respond to specific needs in the community. However, they typically don’t have large fundraising operations or the name recognition that larger charities boast — which can leave them particularly vulnerable when the economy falters,” says Barbara Harman, President of the Catalogue. “During this time of economic stress, it’s important not to forget those who are most in need. Donating a portion of your tax rebate is a good way to begin making a difference.”
As Jean Guiffre of Top Banana Home Delivered Groceries, a 2004 Catalogue for Philanthropy charity notes, “Tens of thousands of seniors in our area are virtual prisoners in their homes. And they make do silently or go without. With just one $600 rebate check to Top Banana, a person could help 120 people age in their own home with their familiar surroundings and precious memories.”
The Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington connects donors with vetted local charities that provide a wide range of services. If you are looking for a trustworthy organization to support, the Catalogue features more than 300 organizations where your contributions will have significant impact. Act on your passion, for the common good.
