Catalogue for Philanthropy Receives Proclamation from City of Alexandria, VA
WASHINGTON, DC; March 26, 2008 — Last evening, Alexandria City Councilman Tim Lovain presented a Proclamation to Kathy Jankowski and Lyles Carr, board members of the Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington, honoring Barbara Harman and the Catalogue for Philanthropy for its work promoting philanthropy in the region. Six charities that serve Alexandria, Virginia, hosted a reception prior to the council meeting, attended by dozens of board members, volunteers, artists, and the general public. The Proclamation also recognizes these six organizations for being selected to be featured in the 2007/2008 Catalogue: Janet Barnett, Senior Services of Alexandria; Patricia Donnelly, The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia; Marga Fripp, Empowered Women; Kari Galloway, Frieds of Guest House; Ken Naser, Alive!; and Bonnie Baxley, Community Lodgings.
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Barbara Harman, Founder of the Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington, had a vision to offer donors a vetted list of excellent, trustworthy local nonprofits; and
WHEREAS, the Catalogue for Philanthropy was created in 2003 to instill passion, awareness and respect for philanthropy; and
WHEREAS, the Catalogue for Philanthropy serves as a vehicle to promote charitable giving by the public and private sector; and
WHEREAS, the Catalogue for Philanthropy is all about small charities — those that typically are under-publicized and only known to a few; and
WHEREAS, 69 charities were selected fro the 2007/2008 Catalogue by fifty-five reviewers from a cross-section of foundations, businesses, and advocacy organizations, who evaluate applications for distinction, efficacy, merit, accomplishments, transparency and accountability; and
WHEREAS, the Catalogue for Philanthropy is made possible thanks to support from generous donors including the Harman Family Foundation, Meyer Foundation, Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation, CGI, Chevy Chase Trust, and individual donors, among others; and
WHEREAS, six nonprofits who serve the citizens of Alexandria were selected by the Catalogue’s reviewers as the best small nonprofits for 2007/2008 from among 250 applications; and
WHEREAS, these nonprofits include ALIVE!, Community Lodgings, Empowered Women International, Friends of Guest House, Literacy Council of Northern Virginia, and Senior Services of Alexandria; and
WHEREAS, the City of Alexandria is extremely proud of these local nonprofits and the invaluable service they provide to our community and are immensely thankful for the listings in the Catalogue for Philanthropy;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, WILLIAM D. EUILLE, Mayor of the City of Alexandria, Virginia, and on behalf of the Alexandria City Council, do hereby proclaim that the Catalogue for Philanthropy, its Founder Barbara Harman, and all of its supporters are appreciated by the citizens of Alexandria and the people who benefit from these small nonprofits.
