Around Town: September 24-25

So … what would you like to do in this final weekend of September?

Support A Non-Profit:

Enjoy a Taste of Arts, complete with festive music and dancing, to benefit the Alzheimer’s Family Day Center tonight (Friday) at 6:00 at Westwood Country Club in Vienna. On Saturday at 6:30, ASHA for Women (Asian Women’s Self Help Association) hosts their annual gala dinner in Fairfax; learn about Hope Through Empowerment here. And on Sunday at 11:00, Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League (SMYAL) will hold their 14th Annual Fall Brunch at the Mandarin Oriental in DC; you can support LGBTQ youth, who face discrimination everyday in their homes, schools and communities.

Head Outdoors:

Join the Washington Nationals and New Futures for a Friday night out at the ballpark to benefit local youth and help them complete their education; a portion of every ticket purchased goes back to New Futures, so buy right here! On Saturday from 10:00-2:00, Earth Sangha will be planting 500 trees and shrubs in the Thompson Creek floodplain; directions right here. And while it’s not quite outdoors, Friends of Fort Dupont Ice Arena will host a public skating session from 1:00-2:15 (nice and cool!). Then, spend the night camping out under the stars with Potomac Conservancy on Minnie’s Island; sign up here.

Experience the Arts:

Do not miss: Class Acts Arts‘ free Artist Showcase and Family Festival, featuring over 35 teaching artists in music, theater, dance, and visual arts, on Saturday from 9:00-4:00 at BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown. And from 11:00-4:00, join the Accokeek Foundation at National Colonial Farm for the 11th Annual African American Heritage Day, an event rich with jazz & blues music, tales of great military battles, hands-n activities, and the best soul food. On Saturday at 8:00 and Sunday at 7:00 at Dance Place, catch VTDance/Vincent E. Thomas’s newest solo work, exploring simple truths in human behaviors and implied truths in human documents. And on Sunday at 3:00, Washington Bach Consort presents “A Vintage Year: 1685,” featuring Bach’s earliest surviving cantata and a concerto written for two harpsichords.

Start Volunteering:

Interesting in teaching an adult to understand, read, and write English? Sign-up for a two-day training workshop this weekend with the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia: volunteers@lcnv.org. Help kick-start this year’s “Act! Speak! Build! Week” by working in teams to create a building block house with 400 building blocks within an hour; and raise money and awareness for Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County at the same time.
