OAR stands for Opportunities, Alternatives, and Resources – three things that are typically missing from the lives of offenders. Working with the court system, OAR begins by keeping first-time misdemeanor offenders out of jail and directing them to community service projects at shelters, food banks, and nursing homes. For those in jail, restorative justice programs teach them to “restore the harm” they have caused. Life skills classes on topics like workplace behavior and responsible fatherhood, along with one-on-one mentoring for guidance in decision-making and goal-setting, prepare inmates for re-entry into the community. Post-release planning includes emergency assistance, employment readiness and job referrals, family support and programs for children – all designed to keep offenders out of jail and help families recover. The goal is to break the cycle and rebuild lives. Your help means opportunities, alternatives, and resources for people who really need them.
