  • Volunteer Opportunities / Responsibilities: Volunteers (both attorneys and non-attorneys) are needed to assist LCE in our Alternatives to Landlord/Tenant Court Project, our Consumer Protection Unit, the Pro Bono Project, the Brief Services Unit, our Tax Sale Prevention Project, and the LCE Legal Hotline. These programs handle a wide array of issues, including predatory lending, foreclosure, affordable housing, identity theft, grandparents' subsidy and custody, public benefits, SSI/Social Security, debt collection defense, powers of attorneys, wills, consumer health, and other legal matters. LCE volunteers assist staff attorneys and paralegals on individual cases. Work might involve interviewing clients, fact investigation, letter writing, research, or other law office tasks. Other opportunities also are available for retired professionals such as doctors, nurses, teachers, accountants, investigators, attorneys, non-attorneys, high school, college and graduate students, and others are also needed for the programs of D.C. Long Term Care Ombudsman, Elder Buddies, Self Help Offices, and Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP).
  • Types of Volunteers Needed: individual/adult; adult groups of less than 5; individual/high school; families with children; adult groups of 6 or more, including corporate teams
  • Hours Needed: business hours during the week; daytime on the weekend
