"Asha" means "hope" and women of South Asian descent who are survivors of domestic abuse can turn to ASHA for just that. Some speak little English, many distrust the legal system, and most believe what their abusers tell them: they will be deported, jailed, or lose custody if they leave home. But at ASHA they receive assistance in their own language from someone who understands their culture. Volunteer advocates support them in their immediate need to escape abuse and their long-term need to achieve self-reliance. ASHA also helps with custody hearings and access to reduced-cost or pro bono legal and medical services. An emergency fund provides everything from housing, tuition, and transportation assistance, to groceries and childcare. In 2016, ASHA received 448 requests for help and provided long-term aid to 110 women, 46 girls, and 49 boys. And the need grows. You, too, can bring hope to survivors.
