One of the 50 largest school systems in the country, Prince George’s County Schools is straining to accommodate a growing population – and with limited resources, schools struggle to give low-income students the support they need to thrive. A nationally recognized youth-development program, HW-SC serves over 800 at-risk youth at nine middle and high schools, interweaving academics, social services, and employment training. Young Advocates serve as mentors in school, at home, and on the job. Academic tutoring offers support in all subjects, and on state assessments and standardized tests, and helps navigate the tricky college application process. Students complete an intensive, 25-hour youth employment training program and, after interviews, receive job placements at partner sites, enabling them to build their resumes while polishing their job skills. The results speak for themselves: with help from HW-SC, graduation rates are on the rise, hitting 81% in 2016. What a difference.
