Instead of dropping out of school and becoming a teenage wife and mother, as is traditional in the Maasai community, young Kakenya Ntaiya courageously fought to continue her education. In exchange, she promised to to give back to her rural Kenyan village, founding Kakenya’s Dream in 2008. Kakenya’s Dream leverages education to empower girls, end harmful traditional practices, and transform rural communities through three holistic programs. The Kakenya Centers for Excellence (KCE) are full-support boarding schools that have provided 470 Maasai girls to date with an empowering, high-quality education, free from harmful traditional practices like female genital mutilation and child marriage. The Network for Excellence provides career guidance, tutoring, and scholarships to KCE alumnae to ensure that they are supported to finish their education. Health and Leadership Trainings have equipped over 12,000 youth across the region with vital health education and life skills, extending the network of young leaders across the region. Demand for these programs increases each year, revealing a remarkable cultural shift in support of girls' education – a right that every girl should have.
