Many immigrants arriving in the US today have endured the unthinkable: some have fled persecution, violence, and torture; others are victims of human trafficking. Here, they face additional challenges, including a legal system devoid of compassion and difficult to navigate. Founded by the United Methodist Church (but serving all, regardless of religious beliefs), DC-MD JFON provides free legal services to low-income immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. After an initial screening, prospective clients are assigned to a legal clinic or given targeted referrals. Each client consults individually with an attorney, who offers free advice and counsel, and retains select cases (600+ in the past three years). Helping to secure green cards and US citizenship, achieving justice for survivors of trafficking and abuse, keeping families together and safe from deportation these services are needed more than ever. So is your support.
