Origins: The Mass in B Minor

Washington Bach Consort

Johann David Heinichen, Magnificat in A Major Francesco Maria Veracini, Ouverture No. 6 in B-Flat Jan Dismas Zelenka, Te Deum in D, ZWV 145 Johann Sebastian Bach, Missa in B Minor Was the Mass in B Minor Bach's nod to posterity or a sublime meditation on his personal faith? He never heard the Mass performed in its entirety, yet he returned to the work again and again during the last twenty years of his life. Our Season opens with a program centered around the nucleus of what was to become the Mass in B minor, a work Bach hoped would garner him an official title and a position of leadership in the Court of King Augustus III at Dresden. We include music by Bach's rivals and colleagues from the flourishing musical traditions and opulent musical resources of this major artistic center.
