Was the Mass in B Minor Bach's nod to posterity or a sublime meditation on his personal faith? He never heard the more event info > Mass performed in its entirety, yet he returned to the work again and again during the last twenty years of his life. Our Season opens with a program centered around the nucleus of what was to become the Mass in B minor, a work Bach hoped would garner him an official title and a position of leadership in the Court of King Augustus III at Dresden. We include music by Bach's rivals and colleagues from the flourishing musical traditions and opulent musical resources of this major artistic center.

Environmental Film Festival in the Nation's Capital
At the beginning of a new decade in a young century, the escalating threats to our environment are tempered by the emergence of creative solutions. Volunteer Info: The Environmental Film Festival relies on the help of dedicated volunteers. Volunteers are sought for the 2011 festival to assist at and evaluate festival screenings. Volunteers arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of each film and must volunteer for a minimum of FIVE programs. At least three EFF staff members and volunteers attend each film screening to hand out printed programs, track attendance, and fill out evaluation forms.

Celebrate the first day of May and the finale of the Season with themes of rebirth and renewal, drawing more event info > from four distinct areas of Bach's incomparable creative genius. Setting the stage is Bach's exuberant three-movement organ work which truly pulls out all the stops! The Orchestral Suite No. 4 gives our splendid instrumental ensemble a chance to strut their stuff in the festive overture and the successive dance movements. Closing the first half is the most famous, and one of the most demanding, of all of Bach's motets. The first time Mozart heard Singet dem Herrn he was completely overwhelmed by the extraordinary contrapuntal dexterity and grand choral effect of this joyful work for double choir. The concert concludes with the grand Easter Oratorio which showcases soloists, chorus, and orchestra in classic Bachian grandiloquence.
