General Information

  • Volunteer Opportunities / Responsibilities: Legal Aid works with volunteer attorneys through our Pro Bono Referral Program. We refer cases to attorneys working in private law firms and government agencies who seek to represent clients on a pro bono basis. The matters referred include cases in the areas of housing, family law, and public benefits, as well as, a limited number of appellate matters. The matters initially are screened by Legal Aid staff prior to referral, and an experienced Legal Aid staff attorney is assigned as a mentor for each matter that is referred. Legal Aid mentors are available to any questions, provide sample pleadings, discuss relevant case law and strategy, and provide ongoing guidance as the case moves forward.

In addition to the Legal Aid Societyís Pro Bono Referral Program, volunteer attorneys assist Legal Aid in a variety of ways including co-counseling on complex litigation matters, working on special projects, and providing translation services.
