Through its extraordinary network of partners and volunteers, ALIVE! provides emergency and basic needs support for Alexandrians facing hunger, eviction, job loss, homelessness, health crises, and other emergencies. Last year alone, 805 households received assistance for rent, utilities, prescriptions, and other critical needs; more than 28,000 individuals benefited from ALIVE!ís food distribution programs; and over 2,100 low-income families received donations of furniture and housewares." Whatís more, ALIVE! provided shelter for 11 homeless women and their children while helping them work toward permanent housing. And last but not least, the year-round preschool provides high-quality care and education for over 40 at-risk children annually. Since volunteers lead and staff many of these programs (delivering food, driving the furniture truck, reading to children), a full 90% of ALIVEís budget directly supports our neighbors in need. Letís keep this humanitarian powerhouse alive Ö and thriving.
The Food Program started pop-up emergency food distributions in new locations and additional wrap-around services with community partners. In just one month, the Food Program distributed 5 times the usual monthly amount of food, equating +170,000 pounds of food, 136,000 meals, or 12,000 people fed for the month of August 2020 alone. The Financial Assistance Program received CARES grant funding in partnership with other local organizations also providing financial assistance. The Financial Assistance Program provides $30,000 in financial assistance each month, and the Board has doubled its financial support for the program.
