General Information

  • Volunteer Opportunities / Responsibilities: Volunteers are AFC’s greatest resource. We rely on more than 400 clinical and nonclinical volunteers who support all aspects of our organization.

Current High-Need Volunteer Roles include (Updated September 2025):
    Spanish Interpreters
    Registered Dietitians
    Diabetic Educators
    Cardiologists
    Gynecologists
    Optometrists
    Pulmonologists
    Rheumatologists

Volunteers are expected to commit to 2-3 shifts a month (4-6 hours, total) for at least eight months. Healthcare providers (physicians, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, counselors, etc.), specifically, are expected to volunteer at least once a month (2-3 hours) for at least eight months.

Clinical volunteers must be licensed to practice in Virginia. Virginia does now offer reciprocity for medical licenses with Maryland and the District of Columbia. Physicians already licensed in those jurisdictions can obtain a Virginia license through a more streamlined process. Additionally, Virginia does participate in the National Compact License for LPNs and RNs.
