Small Business Saturday Book Drives

Nov 30th – Dec 31st

Beginning on Small Business Saturday, Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe will be supporting An Open Book Foundation through a book donation campaign. Shoppers can purchase select books to be donated to students in schools serving local, low-income communities. You can even complete a book plate noting your donation inside of that book! Also, swing by on December 8th at 11am to see children’s author Laura Gehl present story time!

Dec 4th, 7th, and 8th

Friendship Place needs volunteers to help their Winter Warmth Clothing Donation Event be a success! On December 4th and 7th, volunteers will help sort donations before the big distribution day on December 8th, lasting from 12:30 - 7:30pm. This 9th annual event donates winter clothing essentials such as coats, gloves, hats, scarves, and boots to 300+ neighbors in need. A hot meal will be served. Tasks include but are not limited to food and room set-up, assisting “shoppers,” serving food, reception area greeting, bag attendants, organizing tables, and cleaning up. Sign up here. Contact Christopher Cannedy with additional questions.

Holiday Party for Children of Incarcerated Dads

Now - Dec 7th

On December 14th, Hope House is hosting their annual holiday party for children of incarcerated dads. For many of these kids, the gifts they receive at this party are the only ones that will be under their trees on Christmas morning. Last year’s party had such a large turnout, that Hope House is asking for your support in making sure that no child goes home without a gift this year. Please take a moment and pick out a gift here. Hope House needs to receive presents by December 7th to assign them to children and get them wrapped in time.

Become an “Elf” for Kids in Need

Dec 7th

A hundred very low-income children from the Jubilee Housing community will be able to buy gifts for up to four of their friends and family for just a few dollars! A longstanding Jubilee tradition, “elves” will stock the store and help wrap gifts. Santa himself might even make an appearance! Sign up here to purchase gifts and/or act as a volunteer elf on December 7th, 11am – 1 pm.

Restore a Local Park

Dec 7th & Dec 21st

Volunteers are invited to join Dumbarton Oaks Park Conservancy in restoring Dumbarton Oaks Park by removing invasive plants and downed wood, caring for young trees, and generally improving the habitat for wildlife and human visitors, alike! Each volunteer receives a history lesson, tools, training, and snacks. Shifts last 9am to 1pm. If interested, email

Buy a Gift Card for Foster Kids

Now - Dec 9th

Fairfax Court Appointed Special Advocates invites you to donate $25 gift cards that they will distribute to children living in foster care. So many big decisions are made for these children who have been victims of abuse and neglect. Decisions outside of their control – who they live with, where they go to school, how often they have visitation with their parents, and the list continues. Empower them with the choice to get exactly what they want. Gift cards are recommended for stores such as Target, Amazon, and Walmart and must be received before December 9th. Contact Ashleigh Conrad for more details.

Sponsor a Family this December

Now - Dec 11th

Britepaths is working to assist 500 Fairfax County area families who might otherwise go without Thanksgiving meals, December holiday meals and gifts for their children in December. Can you help? You can donate funds, gift cards, or sign up to sponsor a family. The deadline to sponsor a family is December 11th. Visit their Holiday Program page for details.

Give Gifts to Vulnerable Children

Now - Dec 13th

Court Appointed Special Advocate / Prince George’s County provides hope for children in foster care due to abuse and neglect. By matching them with a trained volunteer, CASA ensures that these children have someone in their corner who cares about them and can advocate in their best interests. This holiday season, help ensure that these vulnerable children can find a bit of joy during the holidays by donating a gift before December 13th. Learn more about suggested gift items and how to help here.

Children's Book Drive

Now - Dec 13th

The Literacy Council of Frederick County needs new books for elementary school-aged children! In addition to serving adult literacy needs, this nonprofit also provides appealing, age-appropriate books to the children of their adult students. This fosters a love of reading from a young age and helps break the cycle of low literacy in families. Suggestions for younger grades include board books, picture books, early chapter books; and for older grades: mid-grade chapter books, paperback series, graphic novels, and STEM titles. December 13th will be the deadline to donate a book, so get shopping now! Read more details here.

Holiday Dinner Party for Dreamers

Dec 13th

The Dream Project mentors and provides scholarships to undocumented students who dream of attending college. On December 13th, they're hosting their 9th Annual Holiday Dinner Party. This is an opportunity to learn more about their mission, enjoy a delicious meal prepared by parents (mostly South American cuisine!), and meet Dreamer students. Plus it's free to enter! Learn more details here.

Adopt a Family

Dec 14th

Laurel Advocacy & Referral Services will provide food and gifts to over 250 families and senior citizens this holiday season. Groups or individuals interested in “adopting” a family can donate loose gifts and/or sign up to volunteer for the distribution day on December 14th. If interested, sign up here or contact Alli Milner.

Fulfill a Family’s Wish List

Dec 16th

70 Jubilee Housing families will receive gifts this holiday thanks to the generosity of companies and individuals. For many of their lower-income families, the holidays can be filled with anxiety instead of joy with the extra burden of buying gifts on top of keeping a household afloat. The Wish List is a chance for DC area families to share the goodwill of the holiday with families who could use extra cheer. All gifts should be dropped off at Jubilee Housing on December 16th.

DASH into December

Now - Dec 17th

Help DASH ensure that survivors of domestic violence and their children have a joyful holiday season by donating a gift or hosting a gift drive. Here is a list of suggested gift items. All donated gifts will be displayed at a gift shop on December 19th for survivors to shop at. New, unwrapped gift donations will be accepted by DASH until December 17th. Contact Jessy Murgel for more details.
