The fertile ground at Red Wiggler Community Farm (a "certified organic" farm) not only grows delicious vegetables, it also nourishes a healthy, inclusive community. Since 1996, Red Wiggler has provided meaningful employment for individuals with disabilities and hands-on educational experiences for youth and adults on a local farm. Working on seven acres of land in Ovid Hazen Wells Park, "growers" gain confidence, social skills, and a paycheck (by weeding, planting beds, harvesting, and selling) while providing customers of all income levels access to healthy, local food. 30% of food goes to low-income households; the Farm to Group Home program brings fresh fruits and vegetables to 100 group homes in Montgomery County; and Red Wiggler makes regular deliveries to MANNA Food Center (another Catalogue non-profit). Community Supported Agriculture gives 120 nearby households the chance to pick up fresh food each week and support an active neighborhood farm in the process. Tours, service projects, and environmental stewardship programs also engage 750 more community members each year. Here, the work is truly organic -- and bountiful.
