When children are diagnosed with cancer, they endure long, strenuous treatments; often, the intense focus on beating the disease means the child’s emotional well-being takes a back seat. But thanks to Tracy’s Kids, young cancer patients can engage in meaningful creative work, restoring a sense of control, individuality, and wholeness to their lives. At art tables located in three DC-area clinics, patients explore complex emotions in the company of their peers and under the guidance of a highly-trained art therapist. Whether receiving chemotherapy infusions, waiting for lab results, or just hoping to relax, participants enjoy complete artistic autonomy (a gift during the regimented treatment process), while their creations offer medical teams valuable insight into their emotional health. The art therapists welcome siblings so patients’ brothers and sisters can unpack and process complex feelings, and parents, too, benefit from connecting with one another to share struggles and triumphs. In 2014, Tracy’s Kids provided 11,014 free art therapy sessions. Your contribution brings art – and healing – to children who need it most.
