For people experiencing homelessness in Montgomery County, Shepherd’s Table is often the first place they turn for help, and rightly so. Open every day, this cornerstone of the Silver Spring community strives to meet the needs of all 2,400 individuals who walk through its doors each year. That means providing necessities – nutritious meals (daily dinner, plus brunch on weekends and holidays), information and referrals, clothing and blankets, toiletries, haircuts, bus tokens, prescription services, and more – so that basic needs are met and guests can carry themselves with dignity. An on-site Eye Clinic provides free exams and glasses, and a mailing address service helps guests stay in touch with family, access government benefits, and receive checks from their place of employment. When Shepherd’s Table cannot provide direct assistance, staff and volunteers are there to connect guests with partner services for healthcare, counseling, legal support, and housing. This year, plans are underway to move into a new building and double the number of meals served to neighbors in need. Let’s all come to the table.
