Arts groups fight proposed ticket tax in DCAnd you can too! Mayor Gray has proposed a 6% tax on tickets to arts (theater, dance, music) events in his 2012 Budget. The Washington Post reports that “arts groups say they will lose audience members and revenue with an added tax on tickets it will have a ripple effect on other businesses, such as restaurants.” Check out the above link to learn what you can do.

Despite Recession, Global Giving Abounds — On Monday, PR Newswire reported that “for the first full year of the global recession private giving to the developing world has remained remarkably stable,” according to the new 2011 Index of Global Philanthropy and Remittance from the Hudson Institute’s Center for Global Prosperity. For the US, aid to developing nations in fact rose slightly between 2008 and 2009 by about half a percent.

How to Go Green? Look to DC’s Ledroit ParkThe Atlantic highlighted this historic DC neighborhood for becoming “an incubator for exemplary urban green practices.” In addition to the environmentally-friendly success, the Park’s leaders also deserve credit for smart partnering work: “while the park will feature ornamental gardens, playgrounds, sports fields, and a dog park, its most interesting component is the already-established Common Good City Farm.”

Are Robots the Future of Fundraising? – (Somehow I doubt it … but this was too amusing not to include) According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, “Tim Pryde, a 21-year-old product-design student at the University of Dundee, in Scotland, built DON-8r … a small robot that travels through public spaces, relying on coin donations for charity into a slot on its back to keep moving.” But Pryde points out that his aim “isn’t to replace street fundraisers, but to encourage charities to think about how they might change their approach.”
