Around Town: December 4-5

Welcome to the first weekend of December! … And we already have plenty of season-celebrating events coming your way, so read onward:

Saturday, December 4

9:30 AM — Tutor Training: Basic Literacy Training (Literary Council of Northern Virginia): Looking to combine your love for books and service? Become a LCNV tutor! Training starts this weekend and you can download an application here.

10:00 AM — Heart of L’Arche Tour (L’Arche of Greater Washington DC): Take a one-hour tour, meet core people and board members, and hear from a family whose life has been touched by L’Arche. Call 202-232-4539 to RSVP and get to the heart of it all!

10:00 AM to 9:00 PM — Holiday Ceramic Show and Sale (The Art League): From functional to free-form, unique vessels created by the students and associates of the Art League will be on display all weekend … and could make great holiday gifts!

Noon to 5:00 PM — Gifts That Give Hope (Food For Others): This “alternative market” gives shoppers the chance to choose unique gifts for those on their gift-shopping list and to support those who may not be on someone’s gift list.

2:00 PM — Christmas Revels! (Washington Revels): Travel back in time to Thomas Hardy’s Wessex and celebrate a 19th century English Country Christmas. Carols, dancing, and a mummer’s play included! You can snag tickets here.

7:30 PM — Christmas Revels! (Washington Revels)

7:30 PM — Wifeswappers (District of Columbia Arts Center): Head to Adams Morgan for Cherry Red’s newest production, featuring Jack and Loretta, a conservative, godfearing, churchgoing couple who are about to throw the hottest, wildest Christmas party in Orange County.

8:00 PM — Dance Project: A Choreography Showcase (Joy of Motion): Uniting artists from around DC, this bi-annual showcase is a great opportunity to see an array of brand new works. Tickets here!

8:00 PM — Carla & Company (Dance Place): Inspired by the demolition of the Brookland Studios and creation of the Brookland Artspace Lofts, “Nothing Stays the Same” premieres tonight! Also catch new works from the Dance Place Repertory Class and Step Team. Tickets this way

Sunday, December 5

Noon to 5:00 PM — Holiday Ceramic Show and Sale (The Art League)

1:30 PM — World Changing 101 (Our Daily Bread): Head to GMU for a free workshop and discussion with guest David LaMotte.

2:00 PM — Christmas Revels! (Washington Revels)

2:00 PM — A Celebration of Persistent Voices (The Writer’s Center): Editor Philip Clark and local authors will read work from the beautiful new anthology Persistent Voices: Poetry by Writers Lost to AIDS. Free and open to the public.

3:30 PM — Symphony Holidays (Capital City Symphony): The Congressional Chorus, the American Youth Chorus, and the Atlas Performing Arts Center all unite for their traditional (and free) carol concert on H Street NE!

4:00 PM — Carla & Company (Dance Place)

7:30 PM– Symphony Holidays (Capital City Symphony)

8:00 PM — Giving Hope for the Holidays (Our Daily Bread): Support Our Daily Bread and enjoy the music of acoustic guitarist/singer/songwriter Dave LaMotte at Jammin’ Java in Vienna. Tickets here!
