Around Town: March 4-6

Welcome to Friday, folks! Some awesome performances and events at Catalogue non-profits are right around the corner:

Northeast Performing Arts Group (at Kelly Miller Middle School Auditorium, 301 49th Street NE)

Friday at 7:30 PM, catch When Will It End: Slavery Then, Slavery Now, a thought-provoking dance musical and high-energy educational expression of Afro American History. An extra-cool fact: the performers range in age from 3 to 25. More information right here!

Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company (641 D Street NW)

Just one more weekend! You still have time to experience Oedipus El Rey at 8:00 PM on Saturday & Friday and 3:00 PM on Saturday & Sunday. A re-imagining of the classic Greek tale, set in a present-day LA barrio, Oedipus was called “intense and muscular” by the Washington Post.

Joy of Motion Dance Center (at Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H Street NE)

As part of INTERSECTIONS: A New American Arts Festival, DCypher Dance will rock the Atlas with its signature re-mix of Hip-Hop with Afro, Caribbean, and tap on Friday at 9:30 PM. The concert rolls right into a late-night dance party, including a DJ and cash bar.

Mautner Project (at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, 2500 Calvert Street NW)

You can still nab tickets to the annual gala: Dare to Be! One of the most anticipated events on the LGBT community calendar, the Gala on Saturday at 5:30 PM includes amazing live and silent auctions, reception, and a delicious dinner. Volunteers are also super important and you can call (202) 332-5536 x311 to learn more.

Dance Place (3225 8th Street NE)

Straight out of San Francisco’s Castro District, Pomo Afro Homos rocked Dance Place in the 90s. Two decades later, Pomo co-founder Brian Freeman remixes the company’s classic queer performance work with a new crew on Saturday at 8:00 PM and Sunday at 7:00 PM.

Computer CORE (at the home of a CORE Board Member)

Learn more about CORE, hear the success stories of graduates, and bid on unique silent auction items at this great evening of wine and chocolate on Sunday at 6:00 PM! Check out the event website for more details.
